I, Radosław Nowakowski, was born in 1955. In Kielce. In Poland. In Europe. On Earth. As a kid and teenager I was living in the house at the main street, between the music shop and book store. Such a location might have determined my future. In Kielce I was attending schools. I was learning to write, to read and to play the piano. When I was ten I learned to type letters with my grandpa’s typewriter. Of course not at school, but at home. I’ve had this typewriter till now. In 1976 I used it to type my first book. Only one copy, not full, was made: although the text was completed, the book itself was not, it didn’t get the unconventional form I had imagined. I made this pre-book in Krakow where I was studying architecture. I have never built houses – I have been building books instead. Two years after I had not completed my first book, I began to play the music of the flying fish with OSJAN. We have been playing it till now. I play on conga drums and other percussion. I played with many other bands, different ones but always improvising, yet only OSJAN made records which had the word "book" in their titles... It can mean something, can’t it? In 1992 (most likely) I bought my first computer and a dot matrix printer. I printed with it “The Elephant’s Tail” which I considered the zero part of the NON-DESCRIPTION OF THE WORLD cycle. Two years later I sold my flat in the city and bought a house in the country. A house with and old orchard. I got married. The old orchard has turned into a young, wild, lush wood, while we are slowly becoming “old mushrooms”, according to the popular local saying, in this wood. In 2009 the Elephant’s Tail Book-makery was transformed into a real press called LIBERATORIUM. In fact not much has been changed. For some time I have been practising piano again: various scales in numberless two voice combinations. |
