An old brown small suitcase

Not big – that’s more precise. No doubt there are smaller suitcases than this one. The size is not so important – it could be huge as well. The age is important, the age does matter. The suitcase is made of varnished cardboard. The corners and edges seem to be hardened with leather, rather artificial, not natural. Metal buckles and locks. A textile of good quality inside, maybe even silk – in the past it was supposed to be a sleek suitcase. The edge of the lid is protected with metal lath. All in all a piece of solid, robust work, a piece of luggage to travel with even now. But it is not used for travelling. For a dozen of years it has had a new function: a case for cables... Cave. Nest. Abyss. Lair. Snarl. Den. Dumpsite... A bit of everything.

The suitcase is not hidden entirely under the table. It’s not unseen. It looks out from under the desk and smiles. Or grins. It’s not closed, because it can’t be closed. It could be closed, if the stuff inside were in perfect order making the most of every piece of space, however it is not possible most probably. So it keeps grinning teethlessly – two buckles are not two canines and they are not to bite anybody’s throat. Certainly, everything that is inside could be crumpled more tightly. The lid closed and pressed brutally with a knee. The success is not guaranteed, but highly probable. Such brutality can also result in crushing the lid. And is there any good reason to close and lock the suitcase? Not to let the cables escape and crawl all over the studio?

This is a very interesting problem. We will come back to it later.

And now we will not make an inventory of everything that is inside.

A very precise and detailed list will be replaced with a general description because such one is more necessary and more useful for us, no doubt.

So, we lift higher the ajar lid and we can see computer cables. Mainly. First and foremost. Maybe only. Various cables with various plugs. Cables to connect various devices. The majority of these cables is of no use because the devices to be connected are not used any more, so these cables could be thrown away, but they have been not due to the you-never-know-what-can-happen rule. Surprisingly, sometimes, though very seldom, a useless cable turns out exactly what we are looking for. Of course not a cable with LPT plug suitable for parallel ports which are not available here.

Enough. No need to list more. A huge tangle is inside. That’s the most important.

There is a temptation to consider this suitcase a model of brain. Then cables would be like nerves, while plugs like synapses.

There is a temptation to consider this suitcase a model of mind. Then cables would be like thoughts. What would plugs be then?

And the suitcase itself would be like a head. A nut like luggage. Chops half open, grinning foolishly. (What are the projecting cables? Venomous tongues? Parts of stupid phrases?)

A nice vision. Vivid. Attracting. Fascinating.

Let them tempt while we will handle something else, although we will not forget about this small, old brown suitcase.
